Electric fence energizers must be earthed to deliver a sufficient shock. An earth is simply some metal in contact with the earth (ground). Larger energizers need better earth systems. Problems with electric fences can be caused by poor earthing, particularly in dry conditions because dry and sandy soil needs more metal in the ground. If your earth is not good enough, put in more earth stakes at 1m intervals and wire them together. Also, using larger earth spikes, driven fully into the ground will be more effective than several shorter spikes.
